Moses' Prophecy About the Prophet in the Torah

Moses wrote in the Torah that God would raise up a prophet like him:

Deuteronomy 18:15-18
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

Did Moses Prophesy About Jesus or Muhammad

Christians believe the Prophet about whom Moses prophesied was Jesus. Muslims believe Muhammad was the prophet. Who is right, Muslims or Christians? In some ways the answer is quite simple. Moses said the Prophet would receive God’s Word directly from God. This was true of Jesus, but not of Muhammad.

It was recorded in the Torah that the Prophet like Moses would perform many miracles (Deuteronomy 34:10). Jesus said, “I AM the light of the world,” and He then healed a man born blind (John 9). Jesus said, “I AM the resurrection and the life,” and He then confirmed His Words by raising the dead (John 11). By way of contrast, Muhammad was only a “plain warner.”

Some believe that the Qur’an was Muhammad’s greatest sign. However, this is problematic for at least three reasons:

  1. The Qur'an contradicts previous revelation which records what God did through Jesus in His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead.
  2. Muslims believe that Muhammad did not have prior knowledge of the Bible; Muhammad was illiterate (ummi). Since Muhammad allegedly had no prior knowledge of the Bible, the Qur’an’s familiarity with the stories of the Bible is considered by Muslims proof of the Qur’an’s divine origin. This is problematic because the Torah and Gospel are agreed that ignorance of God’s Word leaves one open to being deceived and led astray. Unlike Moses and Jesus, Muhammad feared he was demon possessed (see The Hadith of Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 1, Number 3).
  3. The Qur’an records the following recitation of Muhammad, “Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered (ummi) Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel…” (Al-Araf 7:157)

Dr. Zakir Naik, a Muslim scholar, referred to al-A’raf 7:157 as a “prophecy of coming of the unlettered Prophet” (Is the Quran God’s Word?). If Dr. Zakir Naik is right about al-A’raf 7:157, then the Qur’an is wrong because the Torah and the Gospel do not contain a prophecy or mention of “the coming of the unlettered Prophet” with reference to Muhammad.
